Within the Act, Section 48 – The Government Electrical Regulator (GER) were established.
New Regulation to govern the Act was drafted and are awaiting comments and recommendations from wider stakeholder group.
Reasons for the GER
To fulfill a desire by GOJ to modernize the electricity sector through faster and more efficient connectivity of electricity to new and existing customers.
To improve Jamaica’s global competitiveness by improving its Global Competitiveness Index rating currently at 79/140.
What is the GER Expected to do?
Recommend to the Minister persons to be licensed as electrical inspectors
Investigate and seek to resolve complaints by the public about the work or conduct of electrical inspectors or electricians
Establish rate classes among licensed electrical inspectors based on their qualification and experience
Establish and maintain a register of licensed electrical inspectors and registered electricians
Determine the categories of electricians
Certify persons to be registered to practice as electricians
Ensure the maintenance of acceptable standards of professional conduct
To monitor the conduct and professionalism of Electricians and Inspectors and the safety of electrical works in Jamaica
